Nepal tourism is hopeful to attract 200,000 Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual (LGBT) tourists this year. Nepal tourism believes that LGBT tourists will contribute 20 per cent of the tourist arrivals in 2011.
An organization representing sexual minorities in Nepal, Blue Diamond Society (BDS) is confident to attract 200,000 LGBT tourists in 2011. Nepal has caught the eye of LGBT community after the historic Supreme Court verdict in 2007.
Supreme Court of Nepal asked the government to grant citizenship to LGBT community people and form same-sex marriage committee for the sexual minorities. Since then LGBT tourist arrivals in Nepal has increased especially from neighboring India and China where LGBT community are still struggling to get any rights.
Several tour operators in Nepal are coming up with attracting packages which including marriage, trekking etc especially for Gay community. These tours are becoming popular among the LGBT community. Considering the rising interest of the Gay community in Nepal, some hotels have also come forward and offered to organize Gay Events and packages.
Nepal is keep to cash in on $100 billion Gay Tourism. Alone United States generates $68 billion from the Gay Tourism. Nepal has high hopes for 2011 which includes attracting one million tourists.
