Some of the most popular beaches in North and South Carolina are among dirtiest beaches in USA. NRDC voted North and South Carolina beaches among the dirtiest in USA as no beach managed to get 4-5 star rating.

The Natural Resources Defense Council rating of most popular 200 beaches in United States gave the worst possible rating of 1 star to five of the Carolina beaches. Surprisingly no beach from 2 Carolina states managed to get 5 star or even 4 star rating. North Myrtle Beach was given good rating of 3 star.

NRDC based their rating on the numbers of high bacteria counts alerts in the water, frequency of water testing at the beaches and the speed in which officials informed the people of dirty water at the beaches. the ratings were given on the data collected for past 3 years.

Beaches in Carolina to receive one star rating are beach at Naga head of North Carolina and three Myrtle Beach sites -- the main beach area, the South Carolina State Park and Campground, Springmaid Beach and Surfside Beach in North Carolina.

Myrtle Beach Officials lashed out at the report and said that its inaccurate. They also added that no matte what we do our beaches still gets poor ratings.

Beaches to perform well in North Carolina are Cape Hatteras lighthouse 3 star, Emerald Isle - 3 star, Kure Beach - 3 star, Surf City - 3 star, Topsail Beach - 3 star, Wrightsville Beach - 3 star.

Beaches to perform well in South Carolina are Edisto Island - 3 stars, Folly Beach - 3 stars, Hilton Head Island - 3 stars, North Myrtle Beach - 3 stars, Hunting Island Beach - 3 stars.
