
Due to Greece air traffic controllers were on strike, only half of the normal flights per hour limit of Greece airspace were allowed to go through. Where other European countries used Turkish airspace to make up for the losses, Cyprus had to rely on Greece due to airspace restriction by Turkey on Cyprus.
Turkey didn't allow Cyprus to pass its airspace despite agreement with the EU to allow all EU nations to pass its airspace. All this resulted in 43 flights were cancelled and 350 flights from Cyprus were delayed by 6 to 12 hours.
Cyprus Airways lost 500 million Euros due to the cancellations of flights to European Destinations. They also had to make food and accommodation arrangements for thousands of stranded tourists which added to their losses.
Cyprus will ask Greece and Eurocontrol to allow more flights from and to the island in consideration of its absolute reliance on Greek air space. Greece strike has hampered Cyprus tourism recovery. Thousands of reservations were cancelled due to Greece Air Strike.
