Protest Held Against Tiger Tourism Ban in Corbett

Even as the Central government has asked Supreme Court to reconsider ban on tiger tourism, protests were organized near the Corbett National Park by the people related to tourism industry against the decision of Apex Court.

These tourism related businesses that operators in villages around the Corbett National Park has slammed the Supreme Court for banning tiger tourism and said it would only bring harm to the big cats.

They pointed out that wildlife in India has survived only in national parks were tourism related activities are taking place. Around 25,000 families around Corbett National Park make their living through tiger tourism. They insist that apart from tour operators they also work as the guards for tigers.

Since their livelihood is so much dependent on the tourism, it is their responsibility to ensure that tigers remain safe inside the Corbett National Park. This is why the demand against the tiger tourism ban is increasing in the villages near Corbett.

A total of 200,000 tourists visit Corbett National Park every year. They tour operators make around 2 billion rupee in revenues from the tourism related businesses which would be lost if ban of tiger tourism is not removed by the Supreme Court.

Their sentiment was also echoed by the Central government in the petition however Supreme Court came down heavily on the government and slammed it for changing its earlier stand of banning tiger tourism. Supreme Court has expressed concerned over the safety of tigers in national parks.
