1. Destination is the key
To have the best ski experience, you need to figure out which ski destination is best suited to your holiday requirements. If you are travelling with children, the answer is simple: Lapland! Home to some of the world’s best ski resorts (including the infamous Kupa ski resort), this Finnish cultural hotspot also offers a number of once-in-a-lifetime experiences for both adults and children. Those of the younger generation will get the chance to meet the one and only Father Christmas, in his natural winter home. The Christmas spirit is ever present in Lapland, and even if you are visiting as early as October, you will find the season is already in full swing.
More suited to romantic couples, the views of the Northern Lights by night are awe-inspiring. The scene up above the mountains and forests is simply other worldly on a cloudless night. Don’t miss these fantastic opportunities if you are looking for a ski holiday with a difference. It goes without saying that the ski slopes in Lapland are incredible, as are the other snow-based activities on offer: snow safaris, traditional sleigh rides (with real live reindeer) and tobogganing.
2. The ski resort for you
Once you’ve decided upon your destination, it’s time to choose a ski resort. Find one with the facilities that suit your needs: are you looking for spa therapists and beauty salons at which to enjoy peace and quiet after the excitement of the slopes? If so, make sure the ski resort you choose has these facilities. In Italy ski resorts are great for those that enjoy fine cuisine; many of them consider restaurants a focal point of their resorts. Traditional Italian dishes are served in many of the country’s luxury chalets, where talented chefs serve foods that will tantalise your senses and fill you up after a day of exercise on the slopes.
3. Considerations for the whole family
For family members aged eight upwards, skiing is a highly enjoyable activity. All ski resorts have smaller slopes for young children, and a range of slopes for adults of all abilities. If you have children aged seven or under, however, you will have to give more consideration to your location. Many luxury ski resorts have private nanny services and crčches for the very young; they will be fully supervised by qualified professionals at all times while you enjoy the slopes. Look for resorts that offer activities such as snow play areas and short walks – these are great places to go if accompanied by young children.
4. Activities
In addition to skiing, there should be an abundance of other experiences available at your ski resort, from snow shoe walking to sleigh rides to ice skating. It is highly recommended you look for those with many specialist winter activities, as you can’t enjoy these anywhere else. They provide you with ample opportunities to enjoy your winter destination.
5. Have fun!
The key to the success of any ski holiday is to have fun. Let go of your everyday stress and pursue your activities with enthusiasm and interest. Even if skiing doesn’t turn out to be your vocation, ski resorts can provide much enjoyment to anyone ready to open their minds to new experiences, with cheap ski deals allowing you to enjoy a brand-new hobby inexpensively.
