The resolution is over human rights violation by Sri Lankan army on the Tamil people in Sri Lanka. Few weeks back some images surfaced in which Sri Lankan army was shown killing the 12 years old son of LTTE chief Prabhakaran.
Every year more than 300,000 Sri Lankans visit India for various reasons like pilgrimage, Cricket etc are the main reason for Sri Lankans to visit India. Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu is considered as the gateway for Sri Lankan tourists to India.
However ahead of the vote in UNHRC, Tamil Nadu is witnessing strong protest against the Sri Lankan government. Schools and college students have come out in support of the resolution and they have received backing of the Tamil parties like AIADMK and DMK.
There have been reports of Sri Lankan tourists facing protests in Chennai. As a result tourist arrivals from Sri Lanka has dropped by 10 to 15 percent in last couple of months.
Today India has voted against the Sri Lanka in UNHRC but it is doubtful that anti Sri Lanka protests in Tamil Nadu will be stopped. The tour operators are worried that tourism will continue to suffer in the coming months.
The national carrier of Sri Lanka has decided to cut down flights between Colombo and Chennai by 50 per cent. Sri Lankan tourists are really nervous in coming to Chennai as they might face strong protest.
Sri Lanka also happens to be big hub for medical tourism in India. This industry is also likely to take the hit. Tourism will also suffer as BCCI is unsure about allowing Sri Lankan players to play in the upcoming IPL season, especially in Chennai.
Since the Sri Lankans were attacked in Tamil Nadu recently then arrivals have dropped by 15 per cent. The fear now is that Sri Lanka tourism will also pay the price as Indians too are nervous about traveling to Sri Lanka. India is the biggest outbound tourism market for Sri Lanka.
