However this excuse has been shattered by the latest incident where gunmen raped 6 Spanish tourists who had rented a Bungalow near the beach at Acapulco. This incident will once again paint Acapulco in the bad light.
Acapulco has been the biggest toll of the drug violence. Tourists deserted the town in favor of Cancun and Los Cabos. Only recently due to efforts of Mexico tourism, Acapulco tourism started to revive. But such incidents will once again overshadow tourism in the resort town.
The impact of such incident of tourist arrivals from United States is not expected to be significant. US tourists have long ignored Acapulco and prefer traveling to Cancun and other destinations.
However such incident do give bad name for the country. The safety issue for the tourists will once again take the center stage and Mexican tourism authorities will have to do a lot of explaining.
Only positive thing to have some out so far is that there is no spillover effect of the incident of other destinations such as Cancun. Neither there are any reports of cancellations from American tourists.
