BRIDGETOWN OVERVIEW
BRIDGETOWN ATTRACTIONS
National Heroes Square - is located in the capital and principal commercial centre Bridgetown, on the island-nation of Barbados. The square lies along Upper Broad Street and is on the northern shore of the Careenage ("Constitution River"), found directly in the centre of Bridgetown.

National Heores Square A fixture of the Square on the west-end includes a bronze statue of Admiral Lord Nelson overlooking the Square. The statue in Bridgetown was erected unveiled on March 22. 1813 to commemorate the anniversary of the British Royal Navy's victory in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The local statue of Lord Nelson in Bridgetown was erected approximately 27 years before the more famous Nelson's Column which is located in London, England's Trafalgar Square.

Nidhe Israel Synagogue - is currently the only synagogue situated in Bridgetown, Barbados. Built in 1654, it was destroyed by a hurricane in 1831, was rebuilt, fell into disrepair until it was sold in 1929. In 1983, it was bought back by the Jewish community and was restored to its present state with its beautiful Gothic arches, and is now a Barbados National Trust protected building and an active synagogue.

Kensington Oval -The Oval" is one of the major sporting facilities on the island and is primarily used for cricket. Locally referred to as "The Mecca" of cricket, it has hosted many important and exciting cricket games between local, regional, and international teams during its 120+ year history.

Garrison Historic Area - is a small district located in the country of Barbados. At times just called "The Garrison". During Barbados' colonial days the area was the settlement base and headquarters for members of the British West Indies Regiment stationed in Barbados during the 1600s and 1700s. The area is situated about 2 miles East of the capital-city Bridgetown, the Garrison area contains several buildings including a barracks for housing military personnel, in addition to the large grassy parade-grounds known as the Garrison Savannah. In the mid- 1800s the area gave way to Horseracing in Barbados. Prominent wealthy Barbadians and regiments troops stationed in the area began what is now the current day tradition of Horse racing at the Garrison.

Barbados Museum - Housed in the former British Military Prison, the Barbados Museum is an excellent place to go to catch up on the history of the island though you'll have the place to yourself. The exhibits start from the time the coral island first appeared; briefly cover the history of the indigenous people of Barbados; the arrival of Europeans and African slaves and the culture of the island during the colonial period; the emancipation of slaves; independence from the British; and more recent history. There is an interactive children's section that the young ones will enjoy.

Careenage - Once a port for ships, the Careenage now houses restaurants, bars, and boutiques set in what used to be warehouses and and stores for ship supplies. Well protected from the open sea, walk along the Careenage with period buildings on one side and fishing and pleasure boats on the other, stop off for a rum at the Waterfront Cafe, and (with a bit of imagination!) you can almost step 150 years back in time!
