Kullu is the capital city of the Kullu District, in the state of Himachal Pradesh, India.
It is located on the banks of the Beas River in the Kullu Valley about ten kilometres
north of the airport at Bhuntar. In the nearby Lug Valley are located the main forest
contractors who have been extracting timber from the forests for the last 150 years
and continue to do so today
Kullu Valley, also known as the "Valley of Gods", is well known for the seven day
festival of Dussehra, a celebration of the mythical Lord Rama's victory over the evil
king Ravana. The festival takes place in the months of October or November
depending upon the Hindu calendar.
PLACE TO VISIT
BIJLI MAHADEV SHRINE - Ten kilometers from Kulu across the Beas river, Bijli Mahadev temple is one of the striking temples in the temples strewn district.
Bijli Mahadev Mandir - about 10 kms from the town across the Beas river. This shrine, dedicated to Shiva.
Naggar - is a settlement in Kullu district of India, and it falls as a stopover. It was the capital of Kullu Rajas in 1460 AD.
Malana - is an ancient village to the north-east of Kullu Valley. This solitary village in the Malana Nala a side valley of the Parvati Valley is isolated from the rest of the world. The majestic peaks of Chandrakhani and Deotibba shadow the village. It is situated on a remote plateau by the side of torrential Malana river at a height of 3029 m above the sea level. Unaffected by the modern civilisation, Malana has its own lifestyle and social structure. People are strict in following their customs. For an outsider, these customs are mysterious and amazing at the same time.
HOW TO REACH
Kullu (Bhuntar) has a airport which is connected to the larger cities like Chandigarh and New Delhi. Air Deccan and Indian Air fly Delhi to Kullu. Luxury Buses are available everyday from Chanderlok Building, Janpath, Delhi, charges are approx. Rs.1000. Where as from ISBT State owned transport buses are running. Deluxe, Semi-Deluxe and Ordinary buses are running at much cheaper rates then private owned. Local tourism buses are available from all inter-state Bus Terminals in North Kullu is the famous international destination among national and foreign tourists,people are coming here from almost every part of the world.Kullu is also famous for international Dussehra festival.Major source of income of Kullu is Tourism and agriculture.Among tourists major visiting places around Kullu are Manali and Manikaran.Local Language of Kullu is Pahari.
